Content Strategy | Instagram

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

Instagram is known for its aesthetically pleasing photo grids, 24 hour stories, and use of hashtags. Reels are a newer addition, Tiktok content can be published to Instagram in the form of Reels.

CONTENT

Instagram is largely visual, so images are key. Keep the 80/20 rule in mind, 80% of the images should not be promotional. Focusing on aesthetically pleasing images that utilize hashtags is key to creating content that feels organic.

Engaging with customers in the comments, reacting when other users tag pictures with Sunnyside, and re-sharing relevant content are ways to engage directly with customers and extend reach. Because consumers are not trusting of conventional ads, coming off as relatable is key.

Images can include, but are not limited to:

  • Store Interior

  • Retail Displays

  • The neighborhood

  • Fun, novel, or interesting items

  • Silly item pairings

We’ll utilize tools like Canva to create templates for repeating content including:

  • Links to new blog posts

  • News and updates

  • Restock announcements

  • Customer spotlights

  • Employee spotlights

Because Instagram does not have the ability to post hyperlinks, we'll set up a link tree so that we can link customers to our site and other socials.

Qualities in Appealing Images

According to a 2022 study...

Color balance, images with a few identifiable colors

Images can be colorful, but the ones that perform best tend to have 1-2 colors that stand out. "Images in the middle of the spectrum tend to perform best... likes gradually decline as the number in an image increases."

But strike a good balance, because it was also found that black-and-white images, or images with just one pop of color, don't perform well either. A good rule of thumb is mostly neutral colors with 1-2 colors that catch the eye.

A balance of highlights and shadows

Another quality where finding the middle ground is important. "Flatter images with minimal highlights and shadows typically generate fewer likes. At the same time, images with imbalanced shadows and highlights also have below average like counts."

Images should be clear and have a well-balanced contrast. Adjust images' brightness and contrast to reach that ideal middle ground.

Either one subject, or many, but not in between

Posts that feature one subject prominently or many objects generate more likes that those with a small handful. When shooting an image with many items, try to give the image a focus.

Object regularity, or patterned/organized objects

How multiple items are organized in an image tend to fall on a spectrum as well. The best performing images are ones that either have highly irregular or uniform, repeating patterns. So commit one way or the other.

Symmetry

Overwhelmingly, symmetrical images tend to do better. Framing is key, put objects center and crop out items that throw off balance.
